Bura Wind, Salt, Rock, and 1,000 Runners – The Toughest Yet Most Emotional Life on Mars Trail
Set against the rugged landscape of Pag, rightfully dubbed “Mars,” the 9th edition of the Life on Mars Trail delivered an experience that will long be remembered.
Instead of spring sunshine, participants were met with a fierce March Bura wind. This force of nature pushed the race back a day from its originally scheduled March 28th date, turning it into one of the most challenging editions to date. It was precisely this unpredictable natural power that gave this year’s event its unique character. Nearly a thousand runners gathered at the starting line, ready to face the biting wind and the breathtaking scenery.
Without a single medical intervention, the race took place in a completely safe environment, further proving the high quality of organization and preparation. The Life on Mars Trail takes place near Novalja, which once again proved why it is the perfect host for an event of this magnitude.
The Region’s Most Authentic Event
Metajna, serving as both the start and finish line, is a place where nature dictates the pace. Every step through the rocky terrain, along the sea, and under the gusts of the Bura becomes a personal experience that transcends sport.
The trail is organized by the Treking liga (Trekking League), which has spent years building the reputation of what is now one of the most authentic trail events in the region. This is backed by the comprehensive organizational support of the Novalja Tourist Board, whose Pag Outdoor project has successfully transformed the “moon island” into a premier active tourism destination.
This year’s edition further highlighted the logistical and security strengths of the organization, supported by the HGSS (Croatian Mountain Rescue Service) and emergency services, who were prepared for all possible scenarios.
The participants themselves added a special dimension to the race. Despite extremely poor weather forecasts, they chose to show up, run, and be part of an unforgettable story. Their faces may have been wind-whipped by the famous Pag Bura, but they were simultaneously and genuinely happy, because the Life on Mars Trail is not just a race; it is an experience felt deep in your bones.
The atmosphere on the ground was captured through the lenses of the photo and video teams, who braved the gusts to catch the authentic moments of this unique race. It is exactly these frames that best convey what words struggle to describe—the intersection of raw nature, challenge, and emotion.
Everyone is a Winner
The Life on Mars Trail proved once again that boundaries do not exist when passion, nature, and community come together. The toughest conditions breed the strongest stories, and this one from the island of Pag is undoubtedly one of them.
Following this year’s edition of the Life on Mars Trail, it is safe to say that everyone is a true winner. The Bura showed up in top form, and judging by the satisfied faces of the participants, they might even miss it if it isn’t waiting for them on the trail next year.
Whoever experiences the Pag Bura once does not easily forget it. This year, competitors—even the most experienced ones—are talking exclusively about this unparalleled experience. This is exactly why Life on Mars is THE trail, completely justifying its title as the most unique race in the region and beyond.
The importance of the Life on Mars race to the City of Novalja’s tourism offering is further underscored by the fact that it proudly bears the “Croatian Island Product” label in the intangible heritage category. The successful execution of this ninth edition, the first major event of the year, is a testament to the organizers’ high level of professionalism and serves as the perfect prelude to the pre-season and spring events on the island of Pag.
